[…]on sling.com” but still available on this site for $40, over half off the original price! AirTV 2 The AirTV Anywhere is available for the blowout price of $80 (again, over half off) here: AirTV Anywhere The product not being sold at Sling.com anymore, coupled with these blowout prices leads me to think the product will no longer be manufactured, but that is just a guess on my part. I asked if Sling will still support the AirTV 2, and they said yes. But, who knows for how long? If you’re willing to take a risk, you can pick up […]

[…]Onn Streamer right next to my Wi-Fi router. In my condo, I have my Wi-Fi router upstairs, and my TV downstairs, so they’re pretty far apart, although every other streaming box I’ve tried hasn’t had a problem connecting. The instructions recommend moving the unit 15-20 feet from each other if you have problems pairing. This was a last resort for me because it’s kind of inconvenient; I had to disconnect the streamer, then bring it upstairs and connect the HDMI cable to a computer monitor I had up there, then restart the setup process. When it was done, I unplugged […]
[…]won’t satisfy everyone, but I think they are reasonable. The apps I tested were YouTube, Tubi TV, Pluto TV, Sling TV, Tablo, and Google’s free TV streaming app, Google TV Freeplay. Seems like every manufacturer these days (i.e., Samsung) has their own “Pluto TV”-style free streaming channel these days. Google’s is not bad at all, featuring 159 channels of TV shows, movies, and even local news. Of course, there are many many many more apps available! That’s one of the advantages of this box over, say, Apple TV. The Tablo Gen 4 (DVR) App For those of you who are looking […]
[…]you don’t have one; you would have had to set it up). Debugging Antenna Reception Problems If TV viewing or recording is flaky, it may simply be due to poor TV reception. Toggle Antenna Amplification The easiest thing to try is to either activate or deactivate the onboard antenna amplifier. To do that in the Tablo app, go to Settings (gear icon) then activate or deactivate Antenna Amplification. Try it both ways and see which gives you more solid reception. Move Your Indoor Antenna Outside If that doesn’t have any effect, you might want to take more drastic measures. If […]
[…]Cancel Cable TV and Streaming Services I have two last recommendations to help cut down on TV viewing: cancel cable TV if you have it, and limit streaming service subscriptions to one at a time, and only for limited amounts of time. These services give you a nearly unlimited “buffet” of stuff to watch any time you want. Imagine trying to go on a diet if you went to an all-you-can-eat buffet for every meal. It would be nearly impossible! Furthermore, when I do subscribe to paid services, I feel obligated to use them because I’m paying for them, causing […]
[…]hours trying to get the unit to work, I found this solution which does the trick! How to Make Your AirTV Recognize Drives I used the Sling iPhone app to do this procedure. First, click your account icon in the upper right corner of the app. Next, click “Local Channels”. Click “Connected Devices”. Click “My AirTV”. Scroll to the bottom and click “Remove AirTV”. This is the key step of the whole process! I wasn’t able to get the unit to recognize the drive without doing this: Do a factory reset on your AirTV by pushing a paperclip in the […]
[…]want to view live TV or recordings away from home, check out the older version of the Tablo, or AirTV. No Manual Recording While recording by clicking a show is super convenient, some users actually like the ability to manually set a recording time and date. This might be because the channel guide is inaccurate in their area, i.e., if they live between two TV markets and are receiving different channels than what the guide says. As of now, there is no way to manually set the recording time and date in the Gen 4 Tablo. Perhaps this will be […]
[…]Fire TV app or Android app). That’s how Tablo (network-connected versions, not HDMI versions), AirTV 2, and the HDHomeRun DVRs work. You can watch broadcast TV from one antenna on all of your TVs! 2. Getting More Channels Due to Better Antenna Placement Using one of the DVRs I mentioned above also gives you a lot more flexibility on where you can put your antenna without having to run a lot of coax cable in your home. For example, you could stick your antenna in your attic and attach it to a Roku one foot away. Otherwise, you’d have to […]
[…]is not ideal for me because I don’t want to run cables throughout my home. The Tablo and AirTV are two DVRs that have Wi-Fi if you don’t want to run Ethernet to your DVR. Next Gen TV ATSC 3.0? The Flex Duo (which I reviewed) does not support ATSC 3.0. The Flex Scribe 4K and Flex Quattro (AKA Flex 4K) claim to support ATSC 3.0 (Next Generation TV) on two tuners. However, I’ve heard of problems with viewing ATSC 3.0 on third-party software (i.e., no sound). I’ve also heard that there could be DRM issues. In short, ATSC 3.0 […]
[…]must connect it to a TV via HDMI. You cannot set it up by using an app like you can with Tablo or AirTV. The other necessary connections are power, antenna, and Internet. The unit won’t work without an Internet connection You can connect it to your home network via wired Ethernet, or wirelessly through Wi-Fi, which is great if you don’t want to run cable from your router to your DVR. Once connected, you’ll be guided through a pretty standard set of pages where you enter your Wi-Fi network password using a letter picker (unless you’re connecting directly via […]
OCTOBER 2024 UPDATE: The AirTV 2 and AirTV Anywhere are no longer available on the Sling website and AirTV 2 is no longer in stock at many other online retailers. I chatted with Sling customer service who said the AirTV 2 is “discontinued on sling.com” although they would continue to support it and referred me to another site that was still selling it. they’re blowing out the AirTV 2 and AirTV Anywhere at massive discounts. So, although you can get a great deal now, I’d say, purchase at your own risk because no one can say how long these products […]
[…]these drives are perfect to use with a Tablo, which is what I’m doing, or another DVR like the AirTV 2 that accepts USB hard drives! It works great in both of these DVRs, and I no longer need a separate power supply for my drive, making the whole thing less cluttered. The drive gets power right from the USB port and is really quiet! It’s kind of fitting that I’m using the hard drive from one DVR as the hard drive for another! I’m also going to hang onto the power supply and fan in case I can use […]
[…]almost any content that you can get on your phone. Samsung is not the only brand that has TVs with AirPlay. Some Sony, LG, Vizio, Insignia, and Roku TVs also feature Airplay. 3. Integrate streaming channels with broadcast/cable TV channels In the Samsung channel guide, when you go past the last cable or broadcast TV channel, you’ll go into Samsung’s TV Plus free streaming channels, which look just like regular TV channels. There’s no real distinction between cable/broadcast channels and Internet streaming channels on this TV. The above screenshot of the channel guide shows that once you get past the […]
[…]iPhones do not have Airplay capability. Conclusion I love AirPlay and I’ve packed away my Apple TV, since AirPlay was the only reason I was keeping it around. Now, my Roku Ultra is the only box connected to my TV! – […]
[…]TV, I use the Tablo. I spend little to nothing on streaming TV services. I watch over-the-air broadcast TV, free video services like YouTube, and some pay services on a temporary basis to binge-watch certain shows, then I cancel them. Read more about my current antenna setup in my blog. Expanding to Cover Internet and Cellular Services As people have shifted away from traditional cable TV, the cost of Internet access has gone up. So, I’m now covering ways to lower the cost of Internet access (as well as cell phone service). I personally switched from cable Internet to Verizon […]
[…]You can watch, say, ESPN or The Walking Dead but you’ll have to pay for a service such as Sling TV❯❯ or YouTube TV. And, you don’t get the network stations on your Roku for free either. You have to pay for a service such as CBS All Access (or use an antenna connected directly to your TV). At the end of the day, many people can find the content they are happy with using a Roku or other Internet-connected device, for much less than the cost of cable TV, but there may be some shows that can only be seen live […]
[…]channels and then get a cheaper streaming service. There is a one-week free trial period. YouTube TV YouTubeTV offers a ton of channels, but the cost is almost as expensive as cable TV! Use an antenna to get your local channels plus one of the lower-cost streaming services above. Only use YouTubeTV if you can’t get your local channels using an antenna. On-Demand Subscription Services – Watch, then Cancel These are not live-streaming services like cable or broadcast TV. Rather, these have libraries of movies and TV shows that you can watch any time as a subscriber. These have monthly […]
[…]Fire TV Stick is a good option as well. A lot of folks (including me) have an Apple TV for Airplay and a Roku (or Amazon Fire TV) for the apps. I hope this has been helpful. What do you think of Apple TV? Please comment below. – […]
