Each of the major types of streaming devices, Roku, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV has its fans, and all of them work pretty well at their main purpose: streaming TV shows and movies from the Internet.

For most people, I recommend Roku because it has a really easy-to-use uncluttered user interface (even my elderly Mom figured it out).

If you have a Tablo Gen 4 DVR, however, I’d recommend a Google TV device (either the Google TV Streamer or the onn Google TV 4K Streaming Box) or Amazon Fire TV; Tablo Gen 4 doesn’t work well with Roku.

If you like Alexa and you own Amazon smart home devices, you might want an Amazon Fire TV device.

Similarly, If you are into the Google Home ecosystem, then you’ll probably want the Google TV Streamer to go with that.

If you’re a fan of Apple services, you might want the Apple TV, but the other streamers can do a lot of what Apple TV can do at lower cost.

More information on all of these here.

Very similar to Google TV operating system is the Android TV OS. There are lots of devices based on Android TV, probably the most famous being the Nvidia Shield. I’d say these are more enthusiast devices that you’d get if you’re into gaming or running a Plex media server.
